The IPL is divided into two virtual groups: Group A and Group B. Each team will play against their own group only once, but they will play teams in the other group twice, once at home and once away. The league stage will have a maximum of 14 matches for each team.
So, who are the teams in each group? In Group A, we have the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants. In Group B, we have the Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and the Punjab Kings.
Each team in the IPL will play a total of 14 league games during the season. The format includes five teams from the other group twice, and the other four from their own group once. This means every team will have the opportunity to face off against some of the best players in the league.
The league phase will run for 52 days, from March 31 to May 21, and will feature a total of 70 matches across 12 cities. With 18 double-headers in the schedule, cricket fans can look forward to an action-packed day of matches.
Ten regular venues, including Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Mohali, will host the majority of the matches. Additionally, some matches will be played in Guwahati and Dharamsala, the second home grounds of Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, respectively.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) was founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the governing body of cricket in India. The idea for the league came from Lalit Modi, a BCCI vice-president at the time, who was looking for a way to bring a more dynamic and entertaining form of cricket to India.
The IPL was designed as a franchise-based Twenty20 cricket league, with teams representing different cities or regions in India. The league was modelled after successful professional sports leagues such as the National Football League (NFL) in the United States and aimed to create a new form of cricket that was more accessible, more exciting, and more commercially viable.
Today, the IPL is one of the most-watched and most lucrative sporting events in the world, with a global audience of millions of fans and billions of dollars in revenue generated each year.
